Located on Nantucket's South Shore, Surfside Beach has a wide, open beach with rolling Atlantic surf. It's popular with families, swimmers, surfers and boogie boarders.
During the summer, Surfside has seasonal lifeguards, restrooms, changing areas and food and drinks available near the beach. There is also a large parking area.
For guests staying at You've Got Whale, one of the best parts is how easy it is to get there without loading everyone into the car.
Bike from You've Got Whale to Surfside Beach
This is one of our favorite rides from the house.
From You've Got Whale, pick up the Old South Road bike path, connect to the Fairgrounds Road path, and then join the Surfside Road path for the ride straight to the beach.
It's an easy ride and a great example of why we love our Mid-Island location. Nantucket's bike path system makes it possible to reach the beach, Town and much of the island without depending on a car for every trip.
Grab a bike, throw a towel in your backpack and head for the ocean.
What Is Surfside Beach Like?
Surfside feels like a proper Atlantic Ocean beach.
The sand is broad and open, with plenty of room for beach chairs, games and kids to spread out. The South Shore waves make Surfside especially popular for swimming, surfing and boogie boarding.
The ocean here is different from Nantucket's calmer North Shore beaches. Waves and currents can be stronger, particularly when the wind picks up, so always pay attention to the lifeguards and current beach conditions.
If your idea of a Nantucket beach day includes waves, sand and the Atlantic Ocean stretching out in front of you, Surfside belongs on the list.
Getting to Surfside Beach
By bike, take the Old South Road bike path from You've Got Whale, connect to the Fairgrounds Road path and then the Surfside Road path, which leads directly to the beach.
By car, Surfside Road runs directly to the beach and a large parking area.
The Wave also provides seasonal bus service to Surfside Beach.

Pack some water and lunch, or grab something to eat at Surfside once you get there. Spend the day in the sand and surf, then bike back to the house.
